1. Create an attic level addition for visiting parents. The existing attic had the minimum allowable headroom. We enlarged the existing attic level and added a wall of windows facing the back yard.
2. Completely reconfigure the layout of the house to accommodate the owners, their two active boys, their pets and the constant stream of neighbor kids who come to play (and eat) This called for a more open floor plan connecting to the backyard, but with interior spaces reflecting the traditional and formal feel of the original house. It was important for the facade to seem open and inviting but, given the location of the project (a transitioning West Berkeley neighborhood), protected as well. We created an open porch but relocated the entry to the side of the house.
