Plastic and composite rail systems use hollow post sleeves to dress up structural 4×4 posts. Stock lengths are longer than needed so I usually end up trimming off 8 in. to 14 in. off.
Instead of tossing the cutoofs into the trash, I recycle them. Post sleeves have just about the perfect square footage for small songbird houses.
I cut scrap decking pieces to fit inside the post sleeves as floors and wide scraps of composite trim for roofs. Ripped PVC pipe leftovers make bow-shaped perches for the entry hole. I glue them on with PVC cement.
Now before we wrap up each deck job, we make a batch of bird houses out of the post sleeve and decking scraps for the clients.

Handy Heat Gun
This heat gun is great for drying joint compound, primer and paint when patching drywall and plaster walls. Plus it can soften adhesive, get a very cold small engine to start, and shrink heat-shrink tubing.
Available in 2- to 12-in. widths, this is a good general-purpose flashing tape that sticks well to most things. It features a two-piece release paper, water-shedding layers, and good UV resistance.
This camera is super useful for tracking down air leaks in buildings. The one-hand pistol grip arrangement frees your other hand for steadying yourself while maneuvering tricky job sites.

This batch of bird houses took 45 min. to make from post sleeve and decking cutoffs.
Decking cutoffs are cut to fit inside the post sleeves for the floor. Perch bows are cut from PVC pipe scraps and glued beneath the hole.
The roof is made from composite trim scraps. A block of decking cut to fit inside the post sleeve is screwed on the bottom to center and secure the roof to the body.
