A Buyer's Guide to Bath Fans: Inline
An alternative to mounting a fan on the bathroom ceiling is to install only the grille there and to locate the fan assembly in an attic or crawlspace. An inline fan can serve multiple grille housings in a large bathroom that has several moisture-producing fixtures. It can also be hooked up to ventilate multiple bathrooms.

I love this concept. Have used it in two different houses and wonder why modern builders don't use this in new construction. Use timers to turn off exhaust fan otherwise it is so quiet you may forget that it is on.
